In the more common mosaics, different genotypes arise from a single fertilized egg cell, due to mitotic errors at first or later cleavages. Another form of somatic mosaicism is chimerism, where two or more genotypes arise from the fusion of more than one fertilized . Gonadal mosaicism or germline mosaicism is a special form of mosaicism, where some gametes, i.e. either sperm or oocytes, carry a mutation, but the rest are normal. [6] [7]The cause is usually a mutation that occurred in an early stem cell that gave rise to all or part of the gonadal tissue. This can cause only some children to be affected, even for a dominant disease.

The Venezuelan species of Moellerius is easily distinguish- ed by its flat eyes, those of Acromyrmex being convex. Cyphomyrmex rimosus uses caterpillar or other, insect feces for substrate on which to grow a unique fungus of yeast-li\e cells; brood is \ept separate from the garden and the nest is an irregular cavity ta\en over by the ants.

In other species of this and other genera of small ants a cell, some mm in diameter, is excavated that contains a. In his book, Mosaics and Other Anomalies Among Ants,William M. Wheeler conducted the most comprehensive analysis of gynandromorphs.

He was the first to observe the prevalence of mosaicism in ants, particularly within the head (Wheeler, ’03). In describing a colony from the genus Cephalotes,Wheeler (’37; p 34) wrote.

The ants had crater nests in the sand near the nests of Acromyrmex (Moe- llerius) balzani sp. planorum Weber previously described and figured (Wheeler, W. Mosaics and other anomalies among ants.

Among social insects, mosaic-like distribution patterns are not exclusive to ants and have been found for termites as well. Ant colonies commonly vigorously defend their nest sites, and aggression against non-nestmates often extends well beyond the nest entrance, sometimes involving territorial exclusion of other ant species.
